(original German title: Die Siedler - Aufstieg eines Königreichs), a real-time strategy game, is the sixth game in The Settlers series. It was developed by Blue Byte and published by UbiSoft, with a US release date of September 25, 2007, a European release date of September 28, and an Australian release date of September 30. A Limited Edition is also available, containing additional in-game content (including statues and a pavilion), an art book, bonus DVD, original soundtrack, technology tree sheet, and a demo CD.

Gameplay

The Settlers: Rise of an Empire is a real-time 4X game. The fundamentals of 4X are expansion, exploration, exploitation, and extermination. The player must manage a settlement using a resource model based on gathering, manufacturing, and currency. The settlers have various needs that have to be fulfilled to keep them happy. If they lack something, they will go on strike.

Rise of an Empire adds several new simulation elements to the series. Winter puts a stop to grain harvesting and fishing, and settlements that rely on these for food will need to plan for storage and production accordingly. Female settlers have been included for the first time. Unlike the peasants the player's leadership is essential to the common settlers. In addition to being a tough military unit, the Knight is central to undertaking quests, and the Knight's level of promotion marks the overall progress of the settlement. With each promotion, the player gains access to new buildings and military units, but the settlers' needs will also increase, reflecting a higher standard of living. There are six knights to choose from in the game. Each of the knights has unique gameplay traits that distinguish them from each other.

In the game there is a campaign consisting of sixteen missions across the game's four climate zones. There are also two types of custom maps: Free Settlement maps are sandbox-style simulations where the player can build up a city in peace, and Quests maps involve a series of objectives that must be completed and may or may not involve military action.

Plot

The game features races from Medieval Europe (such as the Vikings), as well as Northern Africa. The campaign mainly involves a war against the evil Red Prince and his right-hand lady, Crimson Sabatt. Throughout the campaign, the player must attempt to gain allies in the fight against him and put a stop to his quest for dominion over all the lands.

Units

There are 7 kinds of units in this game, including military units and neutral units.

  • Knight(s): The starting unit. Each knight (Marcus, Alandra, Elias, Kestral, Thordal or Hakim) has a different ability. You can have and start with a single knight only.
  • Swordsmen: Units that carry swords. They can set buildings on fire using torches from outposts.
  • Archers: Units that carry bows.
  • Archer mercenaries: Bandit archers that you can train in bandit camp. They carry bows.
  • Clubman mercenaries: Bandit swordsmen that can also be trained in bandit camp. They carry a small, round, wooden shield and a short club, and can set buildings on fire.
  • Vikings: Barbarians who attack villages and your city, and are hostile to all players. The best way to get rid of them is by training some troops or building a castle wall. They can set buildings on fire and steal women. They use either axes or clubs.
  • Wolves: Wild animals who attack you, your allies, neutral players and enemies.
  • Bears: Wild animals who attack you, your allies, neutral players and enemies.
  • Requirements: Windows XP/Vista,Processor: PIV 1.9 GHz,DirectX 9.0c,512 MB RAM,Free hard drive space: 3.5 GB,64MB DirectX 9.0c,DirectX-compliant Sound Card

Latest AMD

Forget about 2010 being the Year of the Tablet: It more appropriately needs to be called the Year of Six. First came Intel's six-core "Gulftown" Core i7-980X CPU, which redefined the top of Intel's processor lineup. Then there was AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 Edition video card, which could drive up to half a dozen monitors at once. Now AMD is also meeting up with Intel on the boxcars with the release of its own new family of six-core CPUs: the Phenom II X6.

Though a few details about the new family were released last month, the chips themselves make their debut today, crowning off the performance segment of AMD's own CPU lines. (The others, in descending order of power, are the X4, the X3, and the X2 families.) The inaugural members of this new clan are the Phenom II X6 1055T and the Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition. In terms of price and performance, the 1090T (the one we received to test) gives you exactly what AMD has led you to expect in recent years—for better or for worse.

One of the most significant is that processors in the Phenom II X6 family support AMD's new Turbo CORE technology. Like Intel's own Turbo Boost, Turbo CORE can "deactivate" unused or underutilized processing cores in order to boost the performance of the others. In the case of the Phenom II X6 chips, a minimum of three cores to "shut off" are required.

The Phenom II X6 processors are designed to be used in tandem with motherboards based on AMD's 8-Series chipsets, particularly the new 890FX chipset, which is launching with the X6 family. These offer features as diverse as support for up to four discrete PCIe video cards, the AMD OverDrive software for overclocking, native support for 6-Gbps SATA, and (at least on many motherboards) USB 3.0. The new 890FX chipset, also launching with the Phenom II X6 CPUs,

Of the two Phenom II X6 CPUs released today, the only real difference comes in terms of clock speed: both actual and potential. The Phenom II X6 1055T has a standard core frequency of 2.8 GHz that can rise to 3.3 GHz when Turbo CORE is enabled, and the 1090T has a standard frequency of 3.2 GHz that can rise to 3.6 GHz.

Otherwise, both CPUs are practically identical, 45nm chips designed for the AM3 socket, with TDPs of 125 watts. Each processor also has one 16-bit/16-bit HyperTransport link at up to 4000 MTps at full duplex or up to 16 GBps bandwidth memory, and an integrated memory controller up to 21 GBps (dual-channel). Intel's CPUs have definitely undergone the more visible changes this time around.

What is blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray Disc (also known as BD or Blu-ray) is an optical disc storage medium designed to supersede the standard DVD format. Its main uses are for storing high-definition video, PlayStation 3 video games, and other data, with up to 25 GB per single layered, and 50 GB per dual layered disc. Although these numbers represent the standard storage for Blu-Ray drives, the specification is open-ended, with the upper theoretical storage limit left unclear. 200 GB discs are available, and 100 GB discs are readable without extra equipment or modified firmware.[3] The disc has the same physical dimensions as standard DVDs and CDs.

The name Blu-ray Disc derives from the blue-violet laser used to read the disc. While a standard DVD uses a 650 nanometer red laser, Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength, a 405 nm blue-violet laser, and allows for almost ten times more data storage than a DVD.

During the format war over high-definition optical discs, Blu-ray competed with the HD DVD format. Toshiba, the main company supporting HD DVD, conceded in February 2008, and the format war ended.[4] In late 2009, Toshiba released its own Blu-ray Disc player.[5]

Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures. As of June 2009, more than 1,500 Blu-ray disc titles are available in Australia and the United Kingdom, with 2,500 in Japan, the United States and Canada
